  • MARCH 31, 2008: LESSON #9: TELLING TIME WITH THE HOUR HAND

Munchkin Math Telling Time: There is a BIG stumbling block with most kids when they start to learn to tell time! What is it? And, how can you be sure YOUR kids sail smoothly through this potential bump in the road?

    So...let's jump right in!

When children are trying to learn to tell time, the hour hand can be confusing. For example, at 4:45, the hour hand from a child's perspective, seems to be pointing to the 5 more than the 4. How can we teach children to say"4" instead of "5" in that situation?

Here's an idea that usually works!

    BIRTHDAY PARTIES!
Yes, birthday parties! Every child looks forward to their birthday! Now, let's match that experience to telling time!

On a clock, show the time 4:00 to your child. Ask them what time the hour hand points to. If they can read their numbers, they will know 4! But, now change the time to 4:30. The hour hand will now be in-between the 4 and the 5. Ask, "When you are 4 1/2, do you get to say you are 5 yet?" Chances are, they know they still must claim they are 4... just like the hour hand!

Now, put the clock on 4:45. It will look like the hour hand is really close to the 5. Remind your child, "If you are 4, and it is almost, almost, almost your 5th birthday. Are you allowed to say you are 5, or do you still say you are 4? Right! You still say you are 4 until your birthday!

    Here are some activities:
    1. Make a clock from a paper plate! Affix 2 contruction paper hands in the middle using a brad fastener. Practice telling time to the hour first with the minute hand up! Then, slowly move to more difficult times

    2. Using the clock, just focus on the hour hand. Move it to a spot on the clock (maybe between the 3 and the 4). Ask your child how old the hour hand is. See if they know to say "3"! Keep practicing!

    3. When ever you practice telling time, warm up by counting by 5's! It's a crucial telling time skill that will help make the experience easier!
Our Telling Time children's DVD is EXCELLENT for helping kids master telling time easily and effortlessly!
