DECEMBER 12, 2007: LESSON #4: TELLING TIME
Telling time is a milestone for children in their mathematical education. Munchkin math can help!
Our Telling Time DVD is the easiest way to teach children through our step-by-step instruction that children love!
What can parents be doing at home!
First and foremost, in this age of digital clocks, be sure your home has analog clocks as well. Exposure is the first step in children telling time!
Once you have a clock, here are some activities that might help:
- Start with basic "O'Clock" times. Put the clock on 5 O'Clock. Have your child say "5 O'Clock" and clap above their heads when they say "O'Clock". Keep changing the times to practice more!
- Use a paper plate to make a clock. Draw the numbers on the plate. Poke a hole in the plate and make 2 clock hands from cardboard. Practice several "O'Clocks" with your child. For example, "3 O'Clock", "9 O'Clock", etc.
- Teach your children to count by fives (5, 10, 15, 20...). As they brush their teeth, you can count by fives so they hear the pattern. Or, each time you sit at a red light in the car, count by fives. Or, as they climb the stairs to go to bed, say a different number on each stair (5, 10, 15, 20) as you climb!
- Use the following chant to teach the difference in the minute and the hour hand: "Hickory Dickory Dock! There are 2 hands on the clock! The hour hand's short, the minute hand's long, hickory dickory dock"
