  • DECEMBER 5, 2007: LESSON #3: Metric Length

One concept that kids can struggle with is the metric system.

The metric system is introduced to students in elementary school and is a term kids need to know.

Today, we will work on 4 of the metric length terms:

    METER!
A METER IS A STRETCH AND BEND!

    DECIMETER
YOU NEED 10 for a meter, like my little brother's shoe!

    CENTIMETER
YOU NEED 100 for a meter, just like my finger width!

    MILLIMETER
YOU NEED 1000 for a meter, just like my pencil lead!

Now, what can moms and dads be doing at home to help with the metric system?

    Here are some activities:
    1. Let's do metric aerobics! Follow these rules! When you say Millimeter, your child squeezes his/her fingers together, showing a millimeter. When you say centimeter, they hold up a finger, showing a finger width. When you say decimeter, they stretch their hand to show a decimeter (the length of a toddler's shoe or a sandwich) And, lastly, when you say meter, they stretch their arms to the sides. Go quickly!

    2. Repeat the activity using Simon Says instead!

    3. Have children measure different objects using finger-widths in the house. Remind them that their finger-width is one centimeter!
Remember, the metric system is actually easier than our standard system here in the US!
