  • NOVEMBER 28, 2007: LESSON #2: VOCABULARY WORDS

Munchkin math teaches young children the vocabulary words that may trip them up later in school and in life. We teach these difficult words by using songs, raps, and chants! My job here today is to help parents with ideas to help their kids in math…starting at a really early age!

    So...let's jump right in!

One word that kids struggle with (and parents, too on homework) is symmetry.

SYMMETRY is a term kids need to know in elementary school. But, symmetry is a hard word for kids to say, let alone to define! Lots of times, teachers and parents say, "mirror image". To children who are 7 or 8, who haven't developed special reasoning skills, that is difficult. So, we help! We use words to walk kids through the skill. So…here goes everyone!

    SYMMETRY CHECK!
NEAR, NEAR, MIDDLE, MIDDLE, FAR, FAR,…CHECK!

OK, let's try that chant one more time….all you people at home…put the laundry down and let's try it together! Ready?

    SYMMETRY CHECK!
NEAR, NEAR, MIDDLE, MIDDLE, FAR, FAR,…CHECK!

Now, what can moms and dads be doing at home?

    Here are some activities:
    1. Draw a vertical line on a sheet of paper. The parent draws a shape on one side. The child draws the same shape in the symmetrical location on the other side.

    2. Ever get to a restaurant too early with a 3-9 year old kid? Try this one! Lay down a straw as a line of symmetry. The parent lays an object (sugar packets or Equal packets or creamers) on one side. Then, the child matches on the other side.

    3. When you dump out the piggy bank, before you count it, use the coins to make a symmetrical picture. Draw a line in the carpet or put painters tape on the floor if you have hard wood
    4. Go to the website for more ideas!
Remember, there are 3 different lines of symmetry:
    HORIZONTAL'S LIKE THE GROUND,
    VERTICAL'S UP AND DOWN
    DIAGONAL'S LIKE THIS!
