  • MAY 12, 2008: LESSON: MAKE SURE YOUR SOON-TO-ENTER KINDERGARTENER IS READY FOR SCHOOL!

Most districts have already started their Kindergarten registration. Therefore, if you have a 5 year old, please contact your local school district office to inquire about registration. Most districts have a user-friendly website as well, including a list of the documents you may need to register your child.

There are a few easy activities you can be doing with your 5 year old this summer to help make sure they are ready to go for kindergarten!

    1) Make sure you are practicing counting with your child every day! If there is a certain number they seem to always skip, that's OK, through repetition and modeling, that will self-correct over time! Don't forget, children need to practice counting up and down! Do, try starting at 50 and counting backwards, too!

    2) Introduce your child to "skip" counting (counting by 2s). How can you do that? You can play the whisper-shout game! For example, whisper the number "one". Then, shout the number "two". Whisper the number "three". Shout the umber "four". After your child masters that, have them say the "whisper" word in their head. Pretty soon, they will be counting by 2s!

    3) Review all of your shapes! Start with the basics (circle, triangle, square, rectangle). Then, move onto the more complex shapes (rhombus, trapezoid, pentagon, hexagon, and octagon). If your child does yet know the more complex shapes, consider our SHAPES DVD. Through its fun and interactive format, they will have all the difficult shapes mastered before you know it!

    4) Spend some time talking about money with your 5 year old. Go over the names of each of the coins and their values. A few fun, interactive games are on our Counting Money DVD. It is a perfect match for children starting kindergarten who want to be prepared!

In June and July, our training facility runs Munchkin Math classes to prepare kiddos for kindergarten! The sessions are very small and highly interactive. Students learn songs to help them master the vocabulary words they will encounter during elementary school! In addition, purchasing the DVD 3-pack and encouraging your child to watch and learn can be a huge step towards a highly successful educational career!
