May 5, 2008: LESSON: VOLUME! CUPS, PINTS, QUARTS, GALLONS!
Many of us get very confused with cups, pints, quarts and gallons! There is an easy was to remember each one!
Start with collecting a gallon jug (milk), a quart, a pint (icecream) and a cup (a measuring cup).
1) Wash these household objects and turn them into bath toys! When they play, use the correct terms!
2) With a permanent marker write the number 1 on the gallon, 4 on the quart, 8 on the pints, and 16 on the cup. Then, fill each object with water. Count how many times it takes to fill the quart and pour it into the
gallon. It should take 4 times! Then, fill the pint and count how many times it takes to fill the gallon. It should take 8!
3) If you child is able to read....show them this neat trick! Write these words in order: CUP PINT QUART GALLON Then, count the letters in each word. Notice, as the words get longer, the volumes increase as well!
Here is a chant that might help!
A GALLON is...
4 QUARTS! 8 PINTS! 16 CUPS!
Try these activities throughout the week, and you and your children will have mastered volume in no time!
