  • APRIL 28, 2008: LESSON #13: LEARNING TO ADD MADE EASY!

Many parents wonder when it is appropriate to introduce their children to addition. As long as a child can ount to 10 and have strong verbal skills...they are probably ready! We will list the beginning activities you might use to start this process!

Get a piece of construction paper and some manipulatives (noodles, legos, paperclips, anything children can count!) and let's get started!

    1. On the construction paper, draw a large circle, followed by a plus sign, then another large circle followed by an equal sign. Now we are set! We will begin to teach addition by introducing children to "plus 1s". In the first large circle, place 1 manipulative. Then, place another 1 in the second circle. Show your child the equal sign, and tell them it is a race track. Then "zoom" the 2 manipulatives to the far right of the paper. As you do this tell them the story, "We have 1 Lego. Then, we get 1 more. Now, how many Legos do we have?" 1 + 1 = 2!

    2. Repeat this activity changing the number of manipulatives in the first circle. For example, place 5 paperclips in the first circle, and 1 in the next circle. Then, say, "zoom" and slide the paperclips to the far right. State, "We had 5 paperclips. Then, we had 1 more. Now, how many do we have in all?" 5 + 1 = 6

    3. Continue to "build" math problems of this nature with your little ones!

Once your child can "build" these addition problems on the mats, they will soon be ready to start oral addition. Again, start with 1s. Say, "What is 3 + 1?" Then, give them a running start by saying, "1, 2, 3...." And, most likely, they will say 4! Next, whjat is 5 plus 1? Say, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5..." Hopefully, they will connext and say 6!
