NOVEMBER 20, 2007: LESSON #1: CONGRUENT SHAPES
Here's your chance to play along with your children. Wendy Miller taught the following rhymes and activities on FOX 31 News in Denver to help parents! These rhymes and activities make math fun and easier for children. Ready? Here we go!
CONGRUENT is a term kids need to know by 2nd or 3rd grade in most elementary schools. But, congruent is a hard word for kids to say, let alone to define! So, we can help!
Try these weekly Activities:
- Use "congruent" any time you would normally use "Same Shape and Same Size". For example, if you are folding laundry, instead of saying, "Can you find a matching sock?" Try this, "What sock is congruent to this sock?"
- Go on a Congruent Hunt with your child! Look for congruent objects in the home! "Can you find 2 congruent chairs?" "Can you find 2 congruent forks?"
- Draw a shape on paper. Have your son or daughter draw a congruent shape!
- Dump out a pile of Legos or blocks on the floor. Have your child find congruent blocks!
This rhyme, as shown on Fox 31 News, might help!
CONGRUENT MEANS SAME SHAPE, SAME SIZE… ROTATION'S OK YOU GUYS!
(What we mean by that is - if one shape is straight up and down and one shape is turned they can still be congruent)
PARENTAL NOTE:
Now, we hear all the time from parents that they think their kids already know their shapes.
Here is a good test:
Ask them if they know pentagon, hexagon, octagon, trapezoid, rhombus, and heptagon!
Most children know circle, triangle, square, and rectangle.
But, most children DO NOT KNOW the above-mentioned shapes they will need to use in school!
***IF your child needs to know these shapes, please click on our store link to purchase the SHAPES DVD. This interactive DVD will have them knowing ALL of their shapes in no time, making elementary school math easier and more fun!
